Rail services provide fast and congestion free links between Devon towns with a station and other parts of the UK. Most rail services are now fast, comfortable and efficient and offer the opportunity to relax, read or work while travelling.

Rail fares can be reasonable, particularly when booked in advance.

Exmouth has a station on the branch line to Exeter also serving Lympstone, Exton and Topsham. Trains often run through Exeter to Barnstaple (the Tarka Line) and Paignton. The Exmouth line is also known as the "Avocet Line".

Trains are operated by First Great Western and run either half hourly or hourly Monday to Saturday until midnight and hourly on Sundays.

Trains connect with the national rail network at Exeter Central and Exeter St Davids with journey times from Exmouth to Exeter St Davids being around 30 minutes.

South West Trains operate services from Exeter Central and Exeter St Davids to London Waterloo via Axminster, Yeovil, Salisbury and Basingstoke.

Cross Country Trains and First Great Western operate services from Exeter St Davids to many parts of the UK including Cornwall, London, The North and Scotland.
